Finding a good technical author in the Midlands or anywhere else in the UK is harder than it looks. That’s because technical writing is somewhat of a niche, and the number of technical writers working in the UK is relatively small. I think the last figure I saw during an ISTC discussion was 7000 there or thereabouts. But now that you are here, your search could well be over (depending on my availability, of course).

Just in case you don’t already know, StrayGoat Writing Services is the business name for me, Craig Wright, an experienced technical author in the Midlands area. Originally based in Coventry, StrayGoat Writing Services has since relocated first to Hinckley, Leicestershire and then in November 2015 moved to Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

You can find out much more about my background and experience on the About Craig Wright page. But what you really need to know is:

  • I have a proven track record of creating engaging, user-friendly manuals, online help, and wikis.
  • I can create impressive and effective training material, including PowerPoint presentations.
  • Marketing copy that promotes the benefits of your products? Not a problem.
  • I know the leading documentation tools, including MadCap Flare, Confluence, and of course MS Office.
  • I’m a qualified and trained professional technical writer. Degree in technical communication, fellow of the Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators.
  • I’ve been a technical writer for 19 years and have worked for multi-national organisations as well as UK businesses.

Technical Author in the Midlands

From November 2015, StrayGoat Writing Services is based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. From this base, I will provide technical writing and copywriting services across the Midlands, including:

Of course, working remotely is also possible, no matter where you are in the world.

What About Other Areas?

“I like your style and I need a technical author. But I’m not in the Midlands? Can you commute?”

If you are flexible with your working arrangements, I may be able to help. I HATE commuting because it is just dead, unproductive time, but that doesn’t mean I can’t travel further afield for certain opportunities. I wouldn’t be able to work away for extended periods, but if there is scope for flexible hours and working from home, travelling a bit further afield may be a possibility. Especially on short contracts.

If you are looking for a technical author in Cambridge, London, or somewhere else, don’t rule me out just yet. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

A Work-From-Home Technical Author

It is entirely possible to create high quality documentation remotely. I know, because I’ve done it – Savantini Ltd are based in Hull and I’ve written 3 user guides for them without ever meeting them. And their SME is in Poland! Isn’t the Internet marvellous?!!

If you are looking for a technical writer and happen to be based in another area of the UK or in another country, ask yourself this: do I really need the technical writer to be on site? If your answer’s ‘no’ or ‘only now and again’, I might just be able to help. Please get in touch for more details.

I work remotely for many projects, especially my SEO copywriting work, so I’m used to working on my own. I enjoy it, to be honest. I understand you may be a little apprehensive about hiring someone to work remotely, but try not to worry – I am very anal about time-keeping and take pride in my work, so you will get more than your money’s worth. Take a look at the Savantini Ltd testimonial for proof!
