Technical content writer – for tech products that are tricky to explain
If you sell technical products, you need to pitch your content very carefully. You’ve got to explain how the products work and what benefits they offer, with just the right amount of information for your customers. It’s not easy explaining how things work, but that’s where I can help you.
For over 20 years, I’ve written technical content for many different companies, including large multi-nationals (Schneider Electric) and smaller UK businesses. I’ve worked in software and hardware development teams and know how to create user-friendly content for websites, user guides, and marketing. So if you need a writer who is comfortable with tech, I could be just what you’re looking for.
Technical content writer for marketing and web sites
To get your content to work for your business, it has to connect with your audience. It’s no good bombarding them with jargon and buzz-words if they don’t understand what you’re going on about. Your content needs to be clear, focused, and accessible.
To make sure your sales content hits the mark with your target audience, I will:
Research your audience
Who are they? What jobs do they do? What are they looking for? Following the best practices of content design, I focus more on people’s roles and goals, rather than hypothetical customer profiles.
Research your industry
Where does your product fit into your industry? What does it offer that the competition doesn’t?
Promote the benefits, not the features
People aren’t interested in features. They are interested in themselves and how your product can make their life easier. That’s what I’ll focus on to capture their attention and make sure that your leads are qualified leads.
Use language and ideas that your customers understand
Of course, I’ll also use my skills to make sure that technical information is explained in simple terms, so that your customer’s don’t need to think long and hard about your product. They will be able to understand the main benefits with just a quick glance.
Technical content for customer support documentation
If you need content to support your customers post-sale, the focus needs to be a little different. Here, you need content that explains how your products work in more detail, and also guides customers when things perhaps aren’t working as intended.
I’ve spent most of my career writing user guides, tutorials, online help, and help centre articles, so know exactly what’s required to help your customers.
Whether you need instruction manuals, ‘how to’ web pages and blogs, support centre articles, or a new online help system, I can help. Here’s a few of images showing HTML5 online help systems I’ve created for customers. I’m not sure if this is for you, but I could create a help system for your products or turn your existing manuals into digital content.
